I have a biracial son and we want him to learn how to hold still to get his hair done so we can braid it when it gets longer. Sometimes with the ponytails in he is mistaken for a girl.

wow never heard of it before. i never done that before. but when my son got his done for the first time he had tears but he did great. and yes he's also biracial. but my other who is not held his head good but they intend to move anyway. i know i do when i get my hair done as well. but it just take time practice. he'll get use to it in time and when gets older. i don't think doing ponytails will help. maybe at home playing w/ his hair and trying to brand it be alot better then letting in public w/ ponytails is good b/c what does he say when ppl call him a girl? but please don't think I'm being hard on you i just saying how i feel.

he's 2... not a big deal yet, but I have a friend with a bi-racial son. He has long beautiful hair, she keeps it braided, and he is often mistaken as a girl... and he HATES IT!, but he LOVES his hair. Pros and cons there!

I don't think there is anything wrong with it but if he is mistaken for a girl I wouldn't take him out with the ponytail. I think it is a good idea to teach him how to hold still though.

yeah, i think that it is wrong. a child that has people incorrectly perceiving his sex could get depressed which would lead to other problems (at an older age).

No, if you want him walking around and getting mistake for a little girl. You need to use a better method.

It is not really wrong, but as he gets older he will likely get teased for it. It doesn't matter at age 2 because he doesn't care and his peers don't care. By the time he hits about 4 years old, he may well begin to care. Of course, by then he may have enough hair to braid into more obviously masculine patterns, but you must be the judge of that.

You may want to consider whether you actually want his hair braided. It may be a lot of work to do this every day. A very short buzz cut may be a good solution. Of course, one person's vision of handsomeness is another person's nightmare, so i can't tell you what to do. My only advice is to be sensitive to what your son might be experiencing because of his hair, especially as he ages. If he is getting teased, you might consider letting him choose a different hair style (subject to your approval.)
