Kinky( Natural Black) Hair in the work place?

I am a young black female in a white dominated profession( ICU nurse and premed student) I do not straighten my hair and I wear many styles( braids, twist, corn row with afro) To be honest I am getting a bit irritated with my co workers. Every time I come to work with my hair different a couple of nurses always put their hand in my hair with out permission and pull it. Then a mob of other nurses will ask rude questions, like How much of that is yours? How much does that cost? If I pull on your braids will I break them? They always ask me in front of a lot of other people which I think is a bit rude. I never ask them if their hair color is real or how much grey they have, if they look nice I just tell them and that閳ユ獨 it. I have asked them nicely before and someone told me that if I didn閳ユ獩 want people asking me questions or touching me then I should just be like everyone else.

How should I deal with my coworkers? It is very important to me that they stop asking such questions and touching me all the time. I don't want to state how I feel and come across as the stereotypical angry black women, as we have only 3 black ICU nurses on our whole unit, plus I am just not an angry person. I live in Michigan and understand that some of my coworkers live in places in the state where there is very little diversity but I have also noticed it is only the white co workers who treat me this way. Many of the Asian nurses and doctors complement me on my hair and or my natural beauty but have never asked rude questions or touched me without permission. What should I do?

demand they stop. no one should be touching you anywhere without permission (period)

Ask them to stop.

when one of them reaches out to touch you just slap their hand away. I think they will get the picture. When I had my hair braided that is what I used to do.

As far as the questions, if they dont mind openly displaying their ignorance by asking you dumb question, than the least you can do is humor them with a condescending remark or two.

Pull your head back and say "can I help you?"

Thats tough, I don't understand why people are so damn rude in some places. The best thing to do is simply call them out for what they are doing. "Why do you continuously pull on my hair?" "Why do you assume that this isn't my hair" They will be forced to realize their own faults. I did that with a white associate of mine who was always making yuck faces at me when I brushed my hair around her... I asked her why was she making those faces and she finally told me it was because she heard black people don't wash their hair.... as stupid as it was, i felt bad that she'd been living with that thought her whole life....

Tell them, "please do not touch me". It is very offensive and I have dealt with co-workers who do the same. I advise them that I like my personal space and if they are really interested, they should go to a beauty salon or supply store and play with the mannequins; I am not a toy and I do not like being treated as such.

This sounds like a job for Human Resources...no one should be touching you against your will....

I understand how you feel I'm a college student and I also work and my coworkers always have to make some kind of comment about my hair (which is natural). They think they can just reach out their hands and touch, I try not to let it angry me but I refuse to let people walk over me. You have sit them down in a calm matter and tell them what they're doing or saying is offensive to yor. Don't get angry just politely tell them and hopely they well get the picture.

i know what u mean. but of course there is nothing u can really do about it. i feel that ur co workers are very curious and think that it is ok to ask questions like that. it rude what they say but imagine what they say about your hair behind ur back. its alot worse i guarantee it.

i think that u should tell them how u feel and tell them to keep their hands to themselves evn if they havent sn alot of diversity they kno better then that theyre very ignorant
